Examples of Interactive Nutrition Education

Interactive nutrition education materials
The Massachusetts Department of Education has a nice listing of links to websites
that use interactive nutrition education, however the focus is mainly for children.

The Nutrition Company

The Nutrition Company is exclusively dedicated to marketing computer software for nutrition professionals. Under their "nutrition education" link you will find a variety of multi-media interactive nutrition CD-ROMs. Many of the CD-ROMs seem as though they would appropriate for both adults and children, and some of the content seems as though it may be analogous to what we have done in FoodSmart. This site was helpful for us to get an idea of pricing for our own CD. One drawback was that I was unable to find any information about the organization itself on their site.

Dole 5 Aday
Dole provides great examples of interactive nutrition education that viewers can actually participate in while visiting the site. The focus of these materials are definitely geared toward children. Important information about fruits and vegetables is presented in a variety of learning formats that are fun and engaging. Dole is also marketing an interactive nutritional CD-ROM, although it is free to teachers. In contrast to my goals with FoodSmart, information about the CD-ROM was just one small part of the site, and the content and layout did not appear very developed.

Nutrition on the Web for teens
This site has an interactive education component where users can take a health quiz, learn the number of calories in common foods, or determine their specific RDAs and BMRs. The content is geared toward the special needs of adolescents, but the site is not very aesthetic. Few graphics and little color are used, and it is text heavy.

Nutrition Cafe

Great site! Nutrition Cafe is a joint endeavor of the Washington State Dairy Council and the Pacific Science Center. This is another site full of interactive and fun nutrition information where viewers can participate in the learning process on the Web. One criticism is that once you start playing a game there are no links to get you back to the home page if you wanted to choose another program.

Computer-Aided Learning in Disadvantaged Communities
A research study in South Africa incorporated Nutrition Modules in computer kiosks at Health Care Centers. These kiosks were already installed in the clinics with the original purpose of teaching literacy to low-income Afrikaans speaking adults with low-literacy levels. Findings show significant increases in knowledge, attitudes, and behavior both immediately following completion of the modules and then one month later.

The integration of psycho-social components of early childhood development in a nutrition programme of Northeast Thailand

The impact of a series of interactive nutrition education video programs was studied in Northeastern villages in Thailand. The overall goal of the study was to assess the impact of integrating a psycho-social module to the intervention, but the study provides another example of the use of interactive multi-media to provide nutrition education to underserved populations. Brief summaries of the 5 interactive video tapes are provided. The authors support that with existing communication technology, visual messages can result in behavior change regardless of functional literacy and distance.
