FoodSmart
is an interactive educational CD-ROM that includes information ranging
from healthy infant and child feeding to chronic disease prevention for
adults. FoodSmart is interactive because it actually uses personal information
that each participant enters into the computer in order to "tailor"
the information to match an individual's current eating habits and knowledge.
Tailoring means the computer will ask each participant a few questions
about their behavior and knowledge pertaining to healthy foods, and then
will tell them how they compare to healthy recommendations and suggest
ways they can improve. The computer also recommends certain parts of the
program that may be most helpful, based on the user's answers. Different
users will get different recommendations and feedback based on how they
answer the questions.
With FoodSmart, people can actively participate in the learning
process by choosing what they want to learn about and in what format.
For example, participants can choose to watch a soap
opera, play a game
show, or hear
personalized feedback on different
dietary topics.
